Don “Moose” Lewis: Have You Lost Your Damn Mind?

There was a link on Twitter today regarding a new minor league basketball team exclusively for white, American-born basketball players. The league plans to place the first team in Augusta. Georgia. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

“The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

“Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league,” the statement said.”

The mayor of Augusta says that he is in favor of attracting sports teams to the city, but he can’t support a franchise that is racially- exclusive.

“As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta,” he said. “However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city.”

Don “Moose” Lewis, the commissioner of the ABAA, said this:

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.”

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of “street-ball” played by “people of color.” He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas’ indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans’ dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

While an argument can be made that there is a desire for a more fundamental style of basketball, to assume that only Caucasian American citizens have the ability to play this style of sport is ludicrous. College basketball provides a medium for a more fundamental style than the NBA and it is not racially exclusive. Additionally, to mask the racist nature of the league under the guise of an alternative medium such as fundamental basketball is weak and any thinking person sees right through your attempt.

“Street ball” as you describe it, “Moose”, is an evolution of the game itself. It is the reason that basketball is enjoying the popularity and success that it is today. If you hope to bring basketball back to where it was in the 1950’s, then be prepared to lose a ton of money. What you claim to want to do in your pick-up game league is the equivalent of asking me to trade in my  F-150 for a Model-T. The style of play is exciting and fast-paced. Maybe I’ll watch one of your games when I need a nap. At least Don Imus won’t have any “nappy-headed hos” to call out.

While I don’t condone acts of stupidity such as Arenas’ gun-toting incident or Latrell Sprewell’s coach-choking tirade, it is incorrigible that you would lump all minorities in a group of immature spoiled athletes with more money than common sense. Call a spade a spade (wait a minute- with your way of thinking, you just might do that) and just say publicly that you want to create a league that is for Klan members, Nazis, and Skinheads.

Here are some possible names for your pony league:

  • The Kansas City Klansmen
  • The Denver Dukes (David)
  • The Augusta Aryans
  • The Nashville Neo-Nazis
  • The San Francisco Skinheads

You don’t need my help with team names. I’m sure you’ve got that covered. Since you are insistent on spending your money, why not donate to the relief efforts in Haiti.

What am I thinking? You wouldn’t do that. Too many black people live in Haiti.

I can’t stand idiots.

    • Good Lord, that is horrendous. His examples are isolated incidents of stupidity, not the norm. I’m not a fan of basketball, but our society tends to highlight he negative. How often do you read a story about something dumb a football player has done off the field, but yet you have to dig to find out about the works of someone like Warrick Dunn who is true example of an athlete using their status for good? Very sad.

It just proves that idiots with money still exist.
    • That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of. If that moron wants an exclusively white sporting league maybe someone should introduce him to the NHL. (all due honors and apologies to Grant Furr – I just couldn’t resist).

  • That is just too stupid for words really. I can’t believe that I actually just read that. I enjoyed your humorous take on the subject too. I guess that is really the only way to respond to an idiot like that. You have to laugh.
